Details Unfold on Soldier's Death Linked to Humiliation and Abuse

On August 11, 2023, the investigation into the case of a mandatory military serviceman's suicide, initiated by the Armenia's Investigative Committee through the eighth garrison investigative division of the military investigative directorate, has been completed. This information has been reported by the Investigative Committee of Armenia.

During the investigation, there were apparent factual findings that the deputy commander of the infantry battalion of the Ministry of Defense of Armenia, after learning that a smartphone belonging to the serviceman had revealed a video involving him and two other soldiers, degraded the honor and dignity of the serviceman, exhibiting cruel treatment in the presence of the battalion personnel.

Feeling depressed, the mandatory serviceman utilized a firearm assigned to him on August 11, 2023, shooting himself in the mouth and nose area, resulting in a fatal gunshot wound and his immediate death.

A public criminal prosecution has been initiated against the deputy commander of the infantry battalion for causing the soldier’s suicide through negligence under part 2, point 2 of Article 522 of the Criminal Code. The criminal proceeding has been forwarded to the supervising prosecutor with a charge conclusion.
