Syrian Army and Security Forces Dissolved, Ahmed al-Sharaa Declared President

The leader of the 'Hayat Tahrir al-Sham' group and the de facto leader of the country, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has been declared the President of Syria for the transitional period. This announcement was made by Hasan Abdel Ghani, the commander of the rebel coalition, as reported by the Syrian SANA agency.

Al-Sharaa will also work on the formation of a temporary legislative council that will operate until the adoption of a new constitution for the country. In addition, the new Syrian authorities have dissolved the army and security services and a new structure will emerge to ensure the safety of citizens.

The dissolution of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, which has been in power in Syria since 1963, was also announced. Since 2000, the General Secretary of the party has been Bashar al-Assad.

In early December 2024, Islamist militants opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's governmental forces entered Damascus and seized power in the country. Assad himself fled and sought refuge in Moscow, which has granted him asylum. The opposing forces to Assad were led by the 'Hayat Tahrir al-Sham' group.
