NATO Provides Secret Information on Weapon Standards to EU, Bloomberg Reports
NATO has begun exchanging secret information with the European Union regarding weapon standards, Bloomberg reports, citing sources.
The discussed criteria are aimed at the 'harmonization' of the armed forces of alliance members and achieving interoperability among allies. These may include aspects like caliber of weapons or common military terminology, according to Bloomberg.
This information, the publication notes, will enable the EU to align norms for both military and dual-use cases, such as radio frequencies.
The move to exchange standards comes as part of new defense initiatives within the alliance, a NATO representative stated. Sources have described this action as an initiative from the new Secretary General, Mark Rutte, who has focused on strengthening ties between NATO and the EU since taking office in October.
As the publication highlights, Rutte's initiative is being implemented at a time when NATO members are looking to rearm in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the return of Donald Trump to the White House has accelerated these efforts.
