Donald Trump to Decide the Fate of TikTok in the U.S.
On Friday, the White House announced that the fate of the Chinese social media platform TikTok must be decided by the new administration led by Donald Trump, due to the deadlines for the entry into effect of a ban. This was reported by RIA Novosti.
Previously, the U.S. Supreme Court had rejected TikTok's request to suspend the enforcement of the ban set to take effect on January 19. The company argued that the ban violates freedom of speech according to the U.S. Constitution. Donald Trump will take office on January 20.
"Given the obvious fact of deadlines, the current administration realizes that actions aimed at enforcing the law will simply pertain to the next administration, which will take office on Monday," the White House statement said.
The White House insists that "TikTok should remain available to Americans, but simply under U.S. or other ownership," thereby addressing national security concerns that arose during the development of this legislation by Congress.
Trump has already responded to the Supreme Court and White House decisions, stating to CNN that he will make his own decision. "Ultimately, everything depends on me, so you will see what I do," he said.
