Germany's Defense Ministry Suspends Its Activity on X
The German Ministry of Defense has announced that it will suspend its official accounts on the social network X. “We decided to take this step as the exchange of facts is increasingly becoming difficult here,” said officials from the ministry.
The accounts of the Bundeswehr’s chief inspector, Carsten Breuer, and other representatives of the ministry will also cease to operate. “The Ministry of Defense has adopted this position. For now, we remain committed to a platform that, of course, is not without controversies,” Politico quoted words from a representative of the German Chancellor.
The decision comes following numerous insults directed by X's owner Elon Musk towards representatives of the German government. In particular, the entrepreneur referred to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz as a “clumsy fool” and stated that he should resign. On January 9, Elon Musk held a live session on the X social network with the leader of the far-right party “Alternative for Germany,” Alice Weidel. Following this, the Bundestag launched an investigation into potential interference in the upcoming German parliamentary elections scheduled for February 23.
At the end of December, the entrepreneur wrote that “only the AfD can save Germany.” Last week, 60 German universities and research centers also left the X social network in protest against the “growing radicalization of discourse” on the platform, according to tagesschau. They believe that X’s algorithms protect extreme right views and conspiracy theories, conflicting with “the fundamental values of universities—cosmopolitanism and academic integrity.”
