Significant Drug Importation Case in Armenia

The National Security Service of Armenia has reported that, based on operational data received at its Syunik regional department, a significant amount of drugs being smuggled into the country from the Islamic Republic of Iran has been uncovered and prevented.

According to the NSS, through a series of operational and investigative measures taken by employees of the Syunik regional department, it was revealed that three Armenian citizens, in preliminary agreement and supplementing each other's actions, were preparing to import a batch of various drugs into Armenia on January 10 of this year for the purpose of illegal sale.

Specifically, on January 10, the members of the criminal group took a previously selected stash from an individual whose identity is yet to be determined, which had been smuggled into Armenia through the Armenian-Iranian state border, and were preparing to transport it to Yerevan.

As a result of the operational and investigative measures, the activities of the criminal group were halted, and the Armenian citizens R.S., A.A., and K.S. were arrested due to reasonable suspicion arising directly from their involvement in the crime. They, along with their vehicles, were transferred to the administrative territory of the NSS's Syunik regional department.

Based on the report regarding the obvious crime submitted by the NSS and the accompanying materials confirming the relevant fact, a search was conducted under the criminal proceedings initiated by the Investigative Committee of Armenia’s Syunik regional department. During the search, 10 kg of drugs were discovered in one of the vehicles, including 8 kg of marijuana and 2 kg of methamphetamine.

Requests have been made to the court to apply detention as a preventive measure against R.S., A.A., and K.S., which have been granted.
