The President of the International Court of Justice Appointed as Lebanon's New Prime Minister

The President of the International Court of Justice, Nawaf Salam, has been appointed as Prime Minister of Lebanon and will form the new government of the Republic. This was stated in a message from the office of the head of state, reports TASS.

“President Joseph Aoun tasked Nawaf Salam with forming the new Lebanese government after consultations with parliamentary factions,” the text of the decree states.

Earlier, Salam received the support of 85 out of 128 members of parliament, while his rival, acting Prime Minister Najib Mikati, received votes from only 9 members, with the others abstaining from supporting any candidate.

Seventy-one-year-old Nawaf Salam is a diplomat and lawyer. He served as Lebanon's permanent representative to the UN from 2007 to 2017. In 2018, he was elected as a member of the International Court of Justice and became its president on February 6, 2024.

Salam hails from a prominent family in Beirut; his cousin, Tammam Salam, headed the Lebanese government from 2014 to 2016.
