Armenia-EU Nuclear Safety Agreement Approved

The Armenian government has approved the agreement regarding the strengthening of nuclear safety with the European Commission in today’s session.

The agreement between the Republic of Armenia and the European Commission was signed on July 24, 2024, and December 16.

According to the agreement, a technical assistance grant of €12.9 million will be provided for the reinforcement of the nuclear safety, radiation protection, and radioactive waste management infrastructure in Armenia. This financial support is specifically aimed at the implementation of measures included in the national plan developed through safety self-assessment stress tests conducted at the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant following the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

The Armenian Nuclear Safety Regulatory Committee must evaluate the compliance of the nuclear power plant's safety level with the requirements of safety regulations and norms outlined in the national plan for the stress test of the ANPP, as well as the implementation of measures included in the safety enhancement program. Moreover, it will oversee the plans for the decommissioning of the ANPP and the management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel.
