This Can Interfere with the Independence of the Supreme Judicial Council and the Judicial Authority: Marukyan
Recently, the meetings of the chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council have become a subject of criticism and even calls for resignation in certain circles. This was stated by the leader of the 'Enlightened Armenia' party, Edmon Marukyan.
“The chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council, Artur Atabekyan, has held a number of meetings recently. He participated in the first meeting of the Council of Heads of Supreme Courts of the CIS, received the ambassador of Kazakhstan, and also met with Sergey Kopirkin, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Armenia. In the future, he may have meetings with the ambassadors of the USA and the EU; should we then also fabricate Armenian history because of this?” he stated.
Article 173 of the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia clearly stipulates that the Supreme Judicial Council is an independent body working to ensure the independence of the judicial system. The same principle is enshrined in Article 79 of the constitutional law 'Judicial Code'.
It should be emphasized that the chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council is not constrained from meeting with any ambassador accredited in the Republic of Armenia, as well as representatives of international organizations. The statements that such meetings by the chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council are unacceptable and the calls for resignation can be considered as interference in the independence of the Supreme Judicial Council and the judicial authority,” he noted.
