I Call on Iran to Respect the Will of the Syrian People: Syrian Foreign Minister

The Syrian Foreign Minister, Assad Hassan al-Shibli, has urged Iran to respect the will of the Syrian people and the country’s sovereignty. This was reported by interfax.ru.

“Iran must respect the will of the Syrian people, the country’s sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” al-Shibli wrote on social media.

The Foreign Minister also warned Iran against spreading chaos in Syria and called for accountability regarding its recent statements.

Al-Shibli's message is a response to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who, during a television address, called on Syrian youth to “stand resolutely against those who seek to create instability in the country.”

On December 8, the armed opposition in Syria announced that it had seized Damascus and was forming a transitional government. President Bashar al-Assad has resigned and left the country. Last Saturday, the temporary government of Syria appointed al-Shibli as Foreign Minister.
