Negotiations Held on Connecting Artsakh to Armenia at the Expense of Meghri: Vahagn Aleksanyan
Vahagn Aleksanyan, a deputy of the 'Civil Contract' faction in the National Assembly, has addressed the negotiation packages on the Artsakh issue put forward by Armenia's second president, Robert Kocharian, on his Facebook page.
“I present to you Kocharian's other 'glorious' package – the 'Territory Exchange' or 'Meghri' option. The terms include:
- 1. A part of the Lachin region and the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast, approximately 4,400 square kilometers, will join Armenia;
- 2. The Meghri region, more precisely the area around Meghri, equivalent to the territory of the Lachin region being transferred to Armenia, will go to Azerbaijan;
- 3. To connect Armenia with Iran, Armenia receives two corridors through Meghri, which will be transferred to Azerbaijan;
- 4. Armenian forces will withdraw from all controllable territories.”
“In this scenario, yes, a negotiation option has been discussed to connect Artsakh to Armenia, but with a major BUT – at the expense of Armenia's sovereign territory, Meghri. This has been a topic of negotiation between Kocharian and Aliyev for months. I cannot even imagine the deep and insatiable love Kocharian harbors for Heydar Aliyev and the Republic of Azerbaijan that he decided to hold negotiations over Armenia's sovereign territories,” he wrote.
