Greece Warns About New Turkish-Syrian Agreement
The transitional situation in Syria renders any potential agreement between Syria and Turkey regarding the delineation of exclusive economic zones illegal. This was reported by the Greek ERT-news channel, referencing sources from Greece's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the channel, Athens has responded firmly and unequivocally to Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloglu's statements regarding a potential Turkish-Syrian agreement. "We are discussing a transitional situation in Syria, which does not legitimize such an agreement; we are in constant communication with Cyprus, neighboring countries, and the European Union," emphasized Greek diplomatic sources.
As Uraloglu had previously stated, Turkey plans to sign a maritime boundary delineation agreement with Syria in the future to protect its interests in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Earlier, sources from Greece’s Ministry of National Defense warned that a potential agreement on the delineation of exclusive economic zones between Turkey and Syria would be an unfriendly move towards Greece and Cyprus.
