Unfortunately, We Were Unable to Prevent This: Mirzoyan

Unfortunately, the international community starts to speak and pay attention to genocides and mass atrocities when they are already established facts. This was stated today by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Ararat Mirzoyan, during the 5th Global Forum Against the Crime of Genocide.

“Unfortunately, we were unable to prevent this, and today we are witnessing the irreversible consequences. This is one of those examples where the response of international bodies was not commensurate with the risk factors and the situation on the ground,” Mirzoyan noted.

According to him, we witnessed this in our region not only around 110 years ago during the Armenian Genocide but also literally last year, when it seemed that the world was visible enough with risk factors that could lead to irreversible consequences.

The head of Armenia’s foreign policy agency emphasized that we saw how the spread of hatred eventually transformed from words into crime.

The Foreign Minister added that we need to find more effective ways to save lives, and that the cumbersome bureaucratic machine must become more sensitive and flexible in terms of demonstrating equal treatment towards everyone.

“The example I provided regarding Armenians applies to all other genocides and the circumstances and causes of mass atrocities, as the foundations, triggers, and risk factors of these crimes are quite similar,” Mirzoyan stated.
