Current Situation Among Armenians Living in Syria
There is a restrained and wait-and-see atmosphere among the Armenians living in Syria. Both locals and Armenians are closely monitoring the developments of the situation. Maria Gabrielian, an Armenian member of the Syrian Parliament, shared this insight in an interview with Armenpress, commenting on the situation that has arisen following the armed opposition's capture of the capital city, Damascus, as well as the ongoing political developments and the future of Syria.
"It's a victorious festive atmosphere early in the morning. Gunfire, cheers of joy," said Maria Gabrielian, describing the current situation.
Regarding the sentiments among Armenians, the Armenian parliament member noted that everyone is in a state of anticipation. "Armenians, like the locals, are following the developments of the situation," she stated.
When asked if the locals are happy knowing that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has left power, the parliamentarian remarked, "Yes, they have no alternative. Just the day before, they were praising Assad, and today, it’s about the revolution." Nevertheless, the parliamentarian was unable to provide information regarding the whereabouts and fate of Bashar al-Assad and his family.
"At this moment, the Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jalali is holding a meeting with the commander of the armed group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, Abu Muhammad al-Julani, to conduct a handover of power," noted the Armenian parliament member, adding that there is still no further clarity.
According to the parliamentarian, a restrained and wait-and-see atmosphere also prevails among Armenians living in other parts of Syria.
Commenting on the prevailing political situation in the country, Maria Gabrielian informed that a transition of power is currently taking place to a temporary government. "The transfer of power is continuing to be implemented fully to the transitional government," concluded Maria Gabrielian, an Armenian member of the Syrian Parliament.
