Women and Men in Armenia Start Marrying Later: Data from Civic
In 2023, the average life expectancy for men and women in Armenia improved compared to the previous two years, with a continued increase in the average age of marriage and a trend towards having fewer children. Civic.am reported this based on data from the "Women and Men of Armenia-2024" study presented by the Statistical Committee.
The research indicates that in 2023, life expectancy at birth increased. According to the Statistical Committee, the life expectancy for girls born in 2023 was 81.0 years, compared to 78.3 years in 2022, 74.2 years in 1992-93, and 75.8 years in 2002-03. The life expectancy for men in 2023 was 74.1 years, compared to 71.4 years in 2022, 66.5 years in 1992-93, and 69.9 years in 2002-03.
The average age of first marriage has increased for both men and women. In 2023, the average age of first marriage for women was 28.5 years, while for men it was 32.1 years. This is significantly higher than in 2003, when the average age of first marriage for women was 22.8 years and for men was 27.4 years, and in 2013, respectively, 25.8 and 29.1 years.
Fertility, or the average number of children born per woman, has drastically decreased since 1991, particularly in rural areas. In 1991, women in rural communities had an average of 3.2 children during their reproductive years, compared to 2.3 children in urban areas. With the ongoing decrease in fertility rates, by 2014, the difference in birth rates between rural and urban areas had almost disappeared, and in subsequent years, until 2020, rural areas even recorded a lower total fertility rate than urban areas. However, in 2022-2023, there was a noticeable improvement in the total fertility rate for the rural population, with values of 2.118 and 2.543, respectively, compared to 1.489 and 1.541 for urban areas.
