Iran May Consider Sending Troops to Syria
Iran may consider sending its troops to Syria to combat terrorist militants if the Syrian government requests it. This was stated by the Republic's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in an interview with the Qatari publication Al Araby Al Jadeed.
“If the Syrian government requests Iran to send troops to Syria, we will consider this possibility,” said the Iranian foreign minister. His comments are cited from excerpts of an interview, the full version of which will be published on Wednesday.
According to him, the activities of terrorist groups in Syria “can cause greater harm to neighboring countries such as Iraq, Jordan, and Turkey than to Iran itself.”
In addition, the minister told the publication that Iran is striving to “hold a dialogue with Turkey regarding existing differences.” Araghchi added that his visit to Ankara on Monday resulted in “preparatory work to stabilize the situation in Syria,” as well as creating an opportunity to take initiative for a long-term solution.
