Who is Leading the 'Coup' in Syria

A coup attempt against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is reportedly underway, according to media sources citing informants. Channel 12 of Israel reports that Israel and the United States are engaged in telephone conversations, preparing for the downfall of Assad's regime.

Gunfire has been heard near the presidential palace in Damascus, and state television has ceased broadcasting. According to some reports, President Assad, who has just returned from Moscow, has been sent to a secure location.

Unconfirmed information suggests that the coup is being led by the head of Syrian intelligence, Major General Husam Laki, who is facing resistance from the 4th Division commanded by Maher al-Assad (the president’s brother) and Iranian forces.
