We Will Not Tolerate Such Treatment: Diplomatic Scandal Between Iran and Russia
Iran has filed a complaint with Moscow regarding the "forced" detention of Iranian students at Kazan University. This is reported by official Iranian sources.
Recall that yesterday, two Iranian students were arrested at the visa extension center of Kazan Federal University and subjected to brutal beatings by Russian law enforcement officers. This was reported by the IRNA state news agency, citing the Iranian diplomatic mission in Russia.
Iran has also issued a note of protest to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, condemning the "violent treatment of Iranian students by the police." Official Tehran has demanded explanations from Moscow regarding the incident. The Iranian Consul General in Kazan, Davood Mirzakhani, responded to the beating and arrest of the Iranian students by the police.
Addressing protesting Iranian students in the main building of Kazan Federal University, he stated, "We will not tolerate such treatment of our students. Iranian citizens studying abroad have the right to respect and fair treatment. We will pursue the complete protection of our students' rights."
"Russian police confuse the Iranian people with other nations. We will never allow anyone to treat representatives of our people abroad in an inhumane and illegal manner. This must be officially clarified, and the matter must be resolved within the framework of the law," added the Consul General.
It is noted that the students were released last night following the intervention of the Iranian consulate in Kazan.
From the Russian side, it is noted that the detained foreigners were arrested on charges of "violence against a representative of the authorities."
