Samvel Balasanyan's Son Arrested Earlier Today

Earlier today, the Anti-Corruption Court approved the prosecutor's request and applied arrest as a preventive measure against Khachatur Balasanyan, the son of former Gyumri mayor Samvel Balasanyan. This information was reported to NEWS.am by the prosecutor's office.

It should be recalled that he was arrested a month ago, on October 11, at the Zvartnots Airport while attempting to travel to the USA. The investigative body had submitted a request for his arrest; however, the court had previously opted for house arrest with a 70 million dram bail as a preventive measure.

According to the criminal case, the former mayor of Gyumri is accused of abuse of office and large-scale money laundering. The charges allege that Samvel Balasanyan and related individuals unlawfully privatized lands adjacent to the cultural heritage site known as the “Black Fortress.” Five defendants are involved in the case, including Samvel Balasanyan’s younger son.
