New Details on the Situation in Abkhazia: Russian Foreign Ministry Responds

The Russian Foreign Ministry has commented on the protests that took place in Abkhazia. The ministry notes that such scenarios do not contribute to the flow of foreign investments.

According to the ministry's representative, Maria Zakharova, Moscow is concerned about the developments and expects them to be resolved through peaceful political methods, without interference.

“We are following the events in our neighboring, friendly Abkhazia with concern, where internal political tensions have once again intensified. Unfortunately, the opposition forces did not consider it possible to resolve their disagreements with the country’s legitimate authorities through civilized, respectful dialogue and stepped out of the legal framework, provoking an escalation of the situation,” the diplomat stated.

She emphasized that the crisis situation created in Abkhazia hinders the country’s development, noting that such scenarios do not facilitate attracting foreign investments, which are a significant factor for the republic’s socio-economic uplift.

“The Russian side, while not interfering in Abkhazia’s internal processes, expects that the current situation will be resolved exclusively through peaceful political means. Of course, it is essential to strictly adhere to the laws of Abkhazia, including in terms of maintaining public order,” Zakharova added.

The administration of the President of Abkhazia announced that it is preparing a document to withdraw the bill on ratifying the investment agreement with Russia from the parliament.

Protesters opposing the ratification of the investment agreement with Russia organized demonstrations in Sukhum. Earlier, demonstrators had stormed the presidential administration and parliament buildings, breaking windows.

The agreement, signed in Moscow on October 30, involves the implementation of investment projects by Russian companies in Abkhazia. According to the head of the parliament’s international relations committee, Alkhas Bartzits, the republic is unable to independently find resources to restore key sectors of the economy.
