Number of People Affected by Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in Armenia Over the Past Year

This year, 216 cases of carbon monoxide poisoning have been recorded in Armenia, which is 70 fewer than in the previous year. This information is provided by the Armenian Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES), which presented the statistics registered at the National Center for Crisis Management (NCCM).

It is noted that in 2022, there were 294 recorded incidents, resulting in 633 people being affected, and 7 fatalities. In 2023, that number slightly decreased, with 286 cases reported, leading to 643 individuals affected, and 1 death. In the current year, 216 cases have been recorded, affecting 498 people with 2 fatalities.

Reportedly, the cause of carbon monoxide poisoning is carbon monoxide itself, which disrupts blood circulation and the functioning of the central nervous system, brain, lungs, and other organs. Symptoms include headache, weakness, fatigue, nausea, rapid breathing, and others, with potential loss of consciousness.

Hrant Chagharyan, head of the operational shift department at the NCCM of the MES, warns that carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless. When symptoms are detected, it is crucial to ventilate the room immediately, turn off gas appliances, and seek medical assistance. “One of the most important conditions is that the gas safety signaling system at home should never be turned off,” Chagharyan emphasized.

He urges the use of factory-manufactured stoves at home and adherence to safety regulations.
