Scandal in the Anglican Church: Archbishop of Canterbury Resigns

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has resigned. The spiritual leader of the Anglican Church stepped down following a scandal involving sexual assaults against boys and young men. He has been accused of concealing crimes.

For many years, the Anglican Church did not provide the police with information regarding incidents of sexual violence, as reported by Sky News.

An independent group of investigators has released a report stating that royal attorney John Smyth, who was a preacher for a Christian organization, assaulted over 100 children and young people from Great Britain and Africa.

It is believed that Smyth could have faced court if Justin Welby had reported his crimes to the police. Officials within the church are suspected of being aware of these crimes but chose to conceal them for Smyth's sake. He died in 2018 while under investigation by Hampshire police.

“Having received the gracious consent of His Majesty the King, I have decided to resign. I hope this decision makes clear how seriously the Church of England takes the need for change and our deep commitment to creating a safer church. I leave with great sorrow for all victims and survivors of violence,” said Welby.
