Will Turkish Authorities Adopt a Law on Foreign Agents?

The Turkish authorities are planning to adopt a law regarding foreign agents. The legislation aims to counter external influence, as reported by Bloomberg, citing a relevant draft document.

The draft law is intended to deter individuals working under the influence or command of another state or foreign organization, acting against Turkey's security or political interests. Violators could face up to seven years in prison. According to the media outlet, the adoption of this law could be used to "suppress dissent." The Turkish bill is reminiscent of measures taken in Russia and Georgia. A similar law was introduced in the Russian Federation in 2012 and has been tightened several times since then. In Georgia, a similar draft law came into effect in 2024, despite protests and a presidential veto.
