Moscow Will Not Leave This Without Response: Zakharova
Moscow will not leave the arrest of Russian journalists at an American airport without a response. This was stated by Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry. Earlier, she reported that the U.S. authorities did not inform the Russian embassy in Washington about the arrest of the Russian journalists who had arrived to cover the U.S. presidential elections.
“The arbitrariness of the American authorities will not go unanswered by us,” Zakharova noted in a statement published on the Russian Foreign Ministry's website.
The official representative added that Russia assesses the incident as another gross violation by Washington of its obligations in ensuring the freedom of information access and media pluralism.
“The fact that Russian journalists had previously notified the American authorities of their intentions and received official permission to carry out editorial assignments indicates the demonstrative nature of this action, revealing the readiness to activate repressive measures at any moment to close off inconvenient information,” Zakharova emphasized.
She further noted that such actions fully fit into the framework of the declared global campaign against Russian media and journalists by the current administration, which directly contradicts not only the U.S. international obligations but also the provisions of its own Constitution,” Zakharova concluded.
