The Death of Yahya Sinwar Could Catalyze a Ceasefire, Says Blinken and Baerbock

The German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken believe that the death of Yahya Sinwar, the head of Hamas's Political Bureau, could serve as a catalyst for ending the conflict in Gaza. This was stated in a joint announcement following their meeting in Berlin, released by the German Foreign Ministry press service.

“Yahya Sinwar was a brutal murderer and terrorist who sought to annihilate Israel and its people,” said Baerbock and Blinken. They referred to the Hamas leader as the orchestrator of the attack on Israel on October 7 of last year.

“Sinwar was standing in the way of a ceasefire in Gaza, and his death could serve as a catalyst for the end of the war,” the German minister and the Secretary of State believe. They called for the release of hostages held in Gaza, as well as for the inhabitants of Gaza to receive humanitarian assistance.

“Germany and the U.S., along with their partners, will make all efforts in that direction,” the statement added.
