NATO Does Not Rule Out That the Ukraine Conflict Could Escalate into a Global Confrontation

NATO considers it likely that the conflict in Ukraine could escalate into a global confrontation. This was stated by the deputy chief of staff for strategic planning and policy of NATO, Major General Devin Pepper of the U.S. Space Force.

“NATO really views the war differently than the United States. Here we think about conflicts at a Eurasian level,” he said. In the context of the Ukrainian conflict, the alliance must “think about global struggles,” he added.

The general also mentioned that, in his opinion, the alliance must be prepared for a potential direct clash with Russia. Pepper voiced that the Russian Federation continues to pose an “existential threat” to the North Atlantic Alliance and is attempting to influence member countries, including allegedly attempting to interfere in their elections.
