EU Announces Suspension of Georgia's Membership Process

After the Brussels summit, EU leaders announced that the actions of the Georgian government contradict European values, thus de facto halting the country's accession process to the union.

The Georgian authorities had earlier adopted two laws criticized by the EU: the "Law on Family Values and the Protection of Minors," known for banning LGBT propaganda (a movement recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation), and the "Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence," also known as the "Foreign Agents Law." The EU has condemned these laws and demanded their repeal from Tbilisi.

"The European Union reminds that this government's moves undermine Georgia's entry into the EU and effectively suspend the membership process," reads the final document of the summit.

European leaders have urged Georgia to undertake deep democratic reforms that align with EU integration requirements. The European Council has also expressed hope that the upcoming parliamentary elections in Georgia will be conducted in a "free and fair" manner, with local and foreign observers being granted unrestricted access.
