We Invite Azerbaijan to Show Political Will: Alen Simonyan

The President of the National Assembly of Armenia, Alen Simonyan, delivered a speech at the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union during the general discussions. Below is the text of his speech:

“Madam President,
Mr. Secretary General,
Your Excellencies,
Dear colleagues,
Ladies and gentlemen,
It is a great honor for me to speak at the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and to discuss the vital role of science, technology, and innovation in shaping a more peaceful and stable future.

For Armenia, a country facing complex geopolitical challenges, the application of science and technology is not only economic growth but also national security, viability, and sustainable development. Since the application of science, technology, and innovation can also be used to the detriment of humanity and can pose challenges on our way to achieving our goals, our choice is to use it for maximum social, economic, and environmental growth while also addressing shortcomings and issues.

One of Armenia's key priorities is the development of renewable energy. Due to the 270 sunny days a year, our country can make solar energy a central part of its energy strategy. We intend to triple solar energy production by 2030, ensuring that at least 15 percent of the country's energy balance comes from renewable sources. The transition to clean energy reduces our dependence on fossil fuels and decreases greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to sustainable development.

Science and technology play an important role in the more efficient management of Armenia’s resources and in reducing the risks associated with climate change. Progress in these sectors offers solutions to the challenges we face, from increasing agricultural productivity to improving disaster response. By smartly applying these technologies, we not only protect the environment but also secure a better future for the next generation.

Dear colleagues,
It is crucial to apply reliable technological solutions. Armenia, like many other countries, is focused on reducing carbon emissions, conserving resources, and promoting a culture of environmental responsibility. This is a collective effort, and we all must contribute to ensuring that technological progress is used wisely for the protection of our planet.

Science and technology are also powerful tools for peacebuilding. Scientific innovations can help us meet people's needs, from reducing conflicts over natural resources to protecting human rights. With this goal in mind, Armenia aims to utilize technology.

As for establishing peace, I would like to inform you that Armenia and Azerbaijan are on the verge of reaching an agreement. In the context where the peace process began seriously months ago, Azerbaijan wanted our agreement on five internationally recognized points. I am pleased to announce that today we have fully agreed on 16 points.

Ladies and gentlemen, perfection should no longer be the enemy of the good. The time has come to establish peace; the time for peace is now. We invite Azerbaijan to show political will, seize the moment, and join us in turning potential into reality. Armenia is ready to sign a peace treaty even today.
