Prosecutor's Office Rejects Motion from Spitak Haiko's Son's Defense Lawyers

The Prosecutor General's Office of Armenia has rejected the motion submitted by the defense lawyers of Hratchya Ghevondyan, the son of singer Spitak Haiko, to terminate the criminal proceedings against him, reports "Haykakan Jamanak." He continues to be under the status of a defendant in the case of usurpation of power.

On September 23, Ghevondyan's lawyers submitted a request to Prosecutor General Anna Vardapetyan to halt the criminal proceedings. Attorney Aleksandr Kochubayev announced Ghevondyan's arrest on May 22. Ghevondyan was released from the courtroom on May 23.

Later, the Investigative Committee published a recording in which, according to the Committee, Ghevondyan discussed plans to "seize the buildings of the government, the National Assembly, and the police headquarters." The Investigative Committee reported that criminal proceedings had been initiated under Article 43-419, Part 1 of the Armenian Criminal Code (preparation for usurpation of power, with a maximum penalty of 15 years imprisonment).
