Conflict That Could Involve the Entire Region: Red Cross Warns

The escalation of violence in the Middle East threatens to lead to a conflict that could involve the entire region. This warning comes from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

"The Middle East is on the brink of disaster. The escalation of violence threatens to turn into armed conflict that could completely engulf it," the statement reads. The ICRC has reminded all parties of their obligations under international humanitarian law, particularly the need to protect civilians and civilian objects.

"The risks are enormous. If the escalation of violence continues, the civilian population could suffer unimaginable harm," said Nicolas von Arx, the ICRC’s Regional Director for Operations in the Near and Middle East.

The committee emphasized that over the past year, civilians have been the most affected by armed conflict. "Examples include the hostage situations in Israel and the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Gaza. Now we are witnessing a horrific rise in casualties and destruction in Lebanon," stated the ICRC.

It has called on all parties to "refrain from using explosive weaponry in residential areas." People forced to leave their homes must be able to "safely evacuate and receive humanitarian assistance." The ICRC is working with its partners in the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement to "expand operational activities in the region, with special attention to supporting health services." However, "the needs for assistance may soon become so great that humanitarian organizations will not be able to meet them," the organization noted.
