The "Helen" storm raging in the southeast United States has claimed at least 117 lives. According to CBS, 46 people have died in North Carolina, 27 in South Carolina, at least 25 in Georgia, and 13 in Florida. CNN further reports that four people lost their lives in Tennessee and two in Virginia. Additionally, nearly 600 residents in North Carolina are reported missing.

Latest figures indicate that approximately 2 million residents in the U.S. are without power. Earlier reports had mentioned power outages affecting over 4 million households. Flooding and landslides have led to the closure of nearly 300 roads in North Carolina and about 150 roads in South Carolina.

U.S. President Joe Biden is scheduled to visit the storm-affected areas later this week, CNN reports.

The "Helen" storm is classified as a Category 4 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale. The storm has caused heavy rainfall and flooding, with about 40 cm of rain falling in Florida, up to 35 cm in South Carolina and Georgia, and more than 33 cm in North Carolina. States of emergency have been declared in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, and Virginia.
