A Second Moon Will Appear in the Sky: When to Observe It
From September 29 to November 25, a "second moon" will be visible in the sky through professional observational instruments. This is reported by the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory.
The asteroid 2024 PT5 was first detected on August 7, 2024, by NASA's Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS). During this period, the 2024 PT5 asteroid, which has a diameter of about 10 meters and travels at a speed of 3,540 km/h, will come under the influence of Earth's gravitational field, but it will not complete a full orbit around the Earth.
In contrast to our primary companion, the Moon, which has been accompanying our planet for about 4 billion years, this "new little moon" will remain around the Earth for about two months, after which it will return to its "home" in the Asteroid belt of Arjuna.
Due to its small size and low brightness, it will not be visible to the naked eye.
