New York Mayor Received Bribes from Turkey to Avoid Discussing the Armenian Genocide

New York Mayor Eric Adams allegedly declined to issue a statement on the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in exchange for promised bribes from Turkey, according to charges brought against him by the U.S. Attorney's Office, as reported by AP.

Adams has previously been charged in a corruption case. Prosecutors believe he received discounts or free flights on Turkish Airlines, complimentary stays in luxury hotel rooms, expensive dinners, and campaign donations exceeding $10 million from fake sponsors through an anonymous Turkish diplomat.

In exchange for the bribes, Adams acted in favor of the Turkish leadership. Notably, he organized an expedited fire safety inspection at the consulate building known as the 'Turkish House' and refrained from making a public statement on the commemoration day for the Armenian Genocide victims.

“I want to clarify that these perks and free services are not accessible to frequent flyers or the general public. This was a long-running scheme to buy the goodwill of a New York official,” said U.S. Attorney Damian Williams at a press conference.

It was previously reported that the FBI conducted searches at the mayor’s residence. Despite the accusations, Adams has stated that he does not intend to resign and is prepared to prove his innocence in court.

According to The New York Times, Adams may have unlawfully received donations, including money from representatives of the Turkish authorities, during his fundraising campaign in 2021. The mayor insists that his campaign was conducted entirely in accordance with U.S. legislation.
