Biden Declines Meeting with Georgian Leadership: Reasons Revealed
The White House has canceled an invitation for Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili to meet with President Joe Biden, which the president typically holds in New York for world leaders attending the UN General Assembly session. This was reported by Voice of America.
The meeting was scheduled for today, September 25. The media has confirmed that Garibashvili has been removed from the list of invitees by a senior representative of Biden’s administration and a source in Congress.
Additionally, the U.S. administration has declined all meetings with the Prime Minister and his delegation. Among those refusing to meet with Garibashvili is Jake Sullivan, the National Security Advisor to the White House.
According to Voice of America, the reason for this decision is the anti-democratic behavior of the Georgian government and several actions, including the adoption of a law on “foreign agents,” operations against non-governmental organizations by the Anti-Corruption Bureau, as well as statements from the ruling party about banning opposition parties.
The report indicates that the last interactions with the Georgian government did not inspire hope in the U.S. administration that Tbilisi would change its course; rather, the steps taken by the Georgian government confirm its intention to disregard Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration and the will of the Georgian people.
