Meeting between Representatives of Armenia and Azerbaijan Expected in October in Geneva

The President of the Armenian Parliament, Alen Simonyan, and the Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament, Sahiba Gafarova, will hold a bilateral meeting during the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) scheduled for October in Geneva. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss efforts toward peace in the region, according to a report from the IPU press office.

Secretary Thomas Fitzsimons informed RIA Novosti about this, stating, “From October 13 to 17, during the 149th Assembly of the IPU in Geneva, the bilateral meeting between the Presidents of the Parliaments of Armenia and Azerbaijan will take place for the third time. It is evident that their meeting aims to incorporate parliamentary diplomacy into the peace efforts in the region.”

The leaders of the legislative bodies of the two countries last met on May 16 during the first meeting of the preparatory committee for the sixth World Conference of Presidents of Parliament organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
