Prisoners' Riot in Kazakhstan Jail Leaves Injured

Prisoners at one of the correctional facilities in the Turkistan region of southern Kazakhstan staged a riot, resulting in injuries to two National Guard soldiers and a staff member, according to Nur.kz citing the country's prison committee (KPV).

A group of inmates set fire during a drug inspection initiated by prison staff. Approximately 400 individuals participated in the riot, with three injuries reported.

Tengrinews reports that more than 30,000 inmates are serving sentences across Kazakhstan's correctional institutions, including 2,000 women. Over 7,000 individuals are held in detention facilities.

In July, the head of Kazakhstan's KPV stated that the number of inmates in prisons has increased over the last four years, attributing this rise to the tightening of several criminal norms.
