VIDEO: Ukrainian Boxer Usyk Arrested at Polish Airport, Zelenskyy Outraged
Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk was arrested on the evening of September 17 at the Krakow airport in Poland. This was reported by Ukrainian athlete and politician Jean Belenyuk.
Later, Usyk's wife, Yekaterina, stated that everything was fine with the boxer. According to her, nothing extraordinary happened, and soon the athlete himself would clarify everything.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that he had a phone conversation with Usyk, after which the boxer was released. The country's leader instructed the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Andriy Sybiha and the Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko to understand the situation.
The spokesperson for the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heorhii Tykhyi, announced that the department intends to protest Poland regarding Usyk's detention. He emphasized that Kyiv categorically rejects the treatment of the boxer.
Later, Usyk recorded a video after being taken into custody at Krakow airport, stating: "Everything is good, I am free." The boxer expressed gratitude to Ukrainian and Polish diplomats, as well as the president, for their concern and for personally working towards his release. He added that there were some "misunderstandings" at the airport, but now everything is fine.
Meanwhile, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha mentioned that the department would send a note to Poland regarding Usyk's detention. "We consider such actions to be disproportionate and unacceptable towards our champion and will send an appropriate note to the Polish side," he stated.
