Yerevan's Pyunik Football Club Put Up for Sale
The champion of Armenian football, Yerevan's Pyunik, is now up for sale as announced by the club's president, Artur Soghomonyan.
“I want to share a decision that has not come easy for me. After long consideration, I have decided to sell the Pyunik Football Club and leave Armenian professional football. The main and only reason is the persecution by the leadership of the Football Federation of Armenia, which has lasted for over two years now. Unfortunately, the situation has long exceeded the bounds of reason and professional ethics, turning into a personal confrontation. This causes great damage to the team, the fans, our academy, and most importantly, the reputation of Armenian football,” Soghomonyan stated.
“For more than two years, I and the Pyunik Football Club have been fighting against reckless behavior, aggression, and the incompetence of the federation’s leaders. In the last four years, five teams from the Premier League and six major investors have exited Armenian football stating the impossibility of working with incompetent leaders of the federation. Unfortunately, I have come to a similar conclusion. This is a very painful but well-considered decision for me, as I truly see no point in working in such an unhealthy environment.”
“I am confident that there will be people interested in continuing the glorious history of Pyunik Football Club, which has not only achieved great successes in recent years but has also become widely known both in Armenia and beyond. I would like to reassure parents and students of the Pyunik academy: I will continue to invest in the youth academy, and all our students will continue their education in their respective age groups. I am not leaving Armenian sports and will continue to invest as I believe that the development of sports is very important for our country.”
“I will be ready to return to Armenian football when the leadership of the federation changes, and people who are truly interested in the development of football come to power. I want to thank all those who have been by our side over the past seven years, supported us, and celebrated victories with us. We have truly achieved historic results, and I am proud to have been a part of this great and united family known as the Pyunik Football Club. Thank you.”
