Baku Rejects: Will Not Sign Peace Treaty on Yerevan's Proposed Terms
Azerbaijan considers the signing of a peace treaty with Armenia unacceptable under the circumstances where only 80% of the text has been agreed upon. This was stated by Ayhan Hajiyev, head of the press service of Azerbaijan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The Armenian side is proposing to conclude a peace treaty based on the currently agreed provisions. However, the Azerbaijani side finds such an approach unacceptable and has repeatedly stated so. There is a rule that a document is not considered agreed until all its points are settled. It can be stated that currently about 80% of the provisions of the document are agreed upon. But you cannot simply exclude the points that have not been agreed upon,” said Hajiyev.
According to him, for the peace treaty to be stable and successful, it is essential to clarify the contentious issues that remain in several areas.
“In general, for Armenia to sign the draft agreement, it must first make appropriate amendments to its Constitution, which currently has territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As long as Armenia does not eliminate those claims from its legislative acts, there can be no talk of peace between the two countries,” emphasized Hajiyev.
