VIDEO: Armenian Law Enforcement Dismantles Approximately 38 Tons of Cannabis
The complex operational-preventive measure named "Cannabis-Poppy-2024" concluded on August 31. This annual event is conducted during the growing and developmental stages of the plants.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the operation lasted around a month and was coordinated by the Drug Enforcement Unit of the Criminal Police Department. The aim of the initiative is to discover and destroy substances containing prohibited drugs in Armenia, as well as wild-grown plants, and to prevent, detect, and investigate cases of illegal drug trafficking.
Almost all divisions of the police participated in the operation. Approximately 38 tons of cannabis and 21 kilograms of wild-poppy were identified and eradicated through burning. Additionally, as a result of inspections and searches conducted as part of the operation, around three thousand cannabis plants were discovered on 76 private properties.
A total of 215 criminal cases were registered, resulting in the seizure of over 21 kg of marijuana, 49 kg of cannabis, 62 grams of opium, approximately 22 dextromorphine, more than 4 kg of methamphetamine, 21.5 ml of methadone, about 13 grams of hash oil, 65 grams of spice, and various psychoactive pills totaling 52.
During the operation, alongside the discovery of drugs, various types of weapons and ammunition were turned over to the police through explanations or discoveries. These included 6 handguns, 11 grenades, 12 grenade fuses, 29 magazines, 7 pistols, 13 rifles, 3 fuses, and a total of 4975 bullets of different calibers.
As a result of the operational-investigative measures taken within the framework of the initiative, 103 individuals wanted under various provisions of the criminal codes of Armenia and other countries were identified.
Although the "Cannabis-Poppy-2024" operation has concluded, the police are not planning to ease their efforts against illegal drug trafficking. Work continues in the direction of crime prevention, deterrence, and investigation.
