VIDEO: If Russia Imposes Economic Sanctions, How Prepared is Armenia to Face Them? Pashinyan Responds

Mariam Z.

It is unacceptable to speak about other countries in a language of insult or mockery, especially regarding a country like Russia. This statement was made today, on August 31, by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during a press conference, in response to a question from the newspaper 'Armenian Times,' owned by the Prime Minister's family. The inquiry referred to claims by political analysts stating that the moment of signing the peace treaty makes Russia increasingly 'edgy,' as it is being pushed out of the region, and asked how prepared Armenia is to withstand potential economic sanctions from Russia.

Pashinyan stated, 'I do not believe it is right to use poor vocabulary when speaking of our partner Russia. I communicate with Vladimir Putin, and our working style is based on mutual respect. I do not accept the vocabulary that exists regarding Russia. We can have problems, and we should talk about them, we should raise them, but using such vocabulary while discussing any country is inherently incorrect. If we have made these mistakes, we should correct them ourselves, not because of others but for our own sake. Because, as I said, a state is a different mindset, a different perception, it is on an entirely different level of thinking, and if we want to have a strong, independent, sovereign state, we must enter a different level of thought and solidify ourselves there.'

Pashinyan also expressed that he does not wish to answer the question regarding whether Russia will impose economic sanctions. He said, 'Why would Russia impose sanctions for its own benefit or for our decision? I do not want us to discuss those scenarios with that kind of vocabulary today.'
