EU Does Not Recognize Maduro as Democratically Elected President of Venezuela

EU foreign ministers have agreed during an informal meeting in Brussels not to recognize Nicolas Maduro as the democratically elected president of Venezuela. This was announced by Josep Borrell, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Borrell made this statement following the results of the foreign ministers' meeting, as reported by TASS. “We have decided that we cannot recognize Maduro’s legitimacy as an elected president. He will, of course, remain the de facto president of the country,” Borrell said.

After counting 80% of the ballots, Maduro received 5,150,092 votes, while his opponent Edmundo Gonzalez received 4,445,978 votes. Maduro has been leading the country since 2013.
