Entry of Armenian Citizens to Certain Countries Restricted for This Reason: Clarification from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia has recently received applications regarding the issue that some Armenian citizens are facing when traveling to countries in the Schengen Area. They are obtaining Schengen visas from various European embassies operating in Armenia, but upon arrival in the respective country, they are denied entry and are compelled to return to Armenia.

After meeting and listening to citizens affected by this issue and clarifying the details through discussions with the competent authorities of the relevant countries, the Ministry has determined the following circumstances:

Citizens' entry to certain countries is restricted because, during the application process for a Schengen visa, the purpose of travel is exclusively presented for that specific country. However, after obtaining the visa, the purpose of the visit (direction, program) or hotel booking is often changed or canceled.

For example, if an application form for a Schengen visa states a purpose of traveling to Bulgaria for 10 days, supported by an airline ticket and hotel reservation, but it later emerges that the individual plans to stay in Bulgaria for 3 days and then travel to Italy or another Schengen country for 7 days, such changes to the purpose of visit may lead the relevant authorities in that country to deny entry. This is considered a discrepancy between the declared purpose of visit and the actual intention or conditions.

It should be noted that having a Schengen visa does not automatically grant foreigners the right to enter the Schengen Area. During passport control, additional documentation may be requested to substantiate the purpose of the visit, as well as verification of sufficient financial resources, proof of hotel reservation payment and validity, and availability of a return airline ticket or other travel information.

Such verification processes are primarily characteristic of countries where migration risks are assessed to be high.

Therefore, it is important to remember that when applying for a visa, it is necessary to contact the embassy of the Schengen country where the visit is planned. For visits to multiple countries, the embassy of the primary (and longer-term) destination should be contacted.

It is crucial to keep in mind that any discrepancies or unjustified changes regarding the purpose, country, duration of stay, or other conditions after obtaining a Schengen visa may result in denial of entry into that country and cancellation of the issued visa, both at the border and prior to departure.

Armenian citizens traveling to foreign states are advised to study the migration regulations of the respective countries in advance, to clearly assess the risks of violating those regulations and the potential negative consequences.

For reliable information, it is recommended to rely solely on the official sources of the relevant country, such as the websites of foreign ministries, embassies, migration services, and other official platforms.
