VIDEO: Residents of 'Veradznund' Neighborhood Block Monte Melkonyan Street
Residents of the 'Veradznund' neighborhood in Yerevan have blocked Monte Melkonyan Street. They are demanding the construction of pedestrian crossings in the adjacent areas of the neighborhood.
According to the residents of the newly built neighborhood, they have been sending continuous applications to the city hall for three years (during the tenure of three mayors) for the construction of an overpass, underpass, or traffic-light-regulated crossing in the median strip of the two major roads that isolate their neighborhood, but to no avail.
Today, the residents blocked traffic to visually "draw" a pedestrian crossing with chalk for their children. They say that the neighborhood is far from stores, and they have to illegally cross the road just to buy bread. With September 1 approaching, they express concern about the danger posed to children heading to school.
For now, the residents are willing to settle for a marked pedestrian crossing and a regulated traffic light, but they insist on an underpass or overpass for the future, as their neighborhood is close to a fast-moving road. They report that the city hall has indicated that a pedestrian crossing is planned, but it will be located next to 'Yerevan Park', approximately 1 kilometer away from their neighborhood, which does not satisfy the residents.
