Powerful Eruptions on the Sun Disrupt Shortwave Radio Communications
On August 22, scientists recorded two powerful solar flares of class M. This was reported by TASS, citing the Institute of Applied Geophysics.
The first flare, recorded at 02:08 Yerevan time in the group of sunspots 3796 (S03E28), had a strength of M5.1/2N and lasted for 18 minutes. Later, at 14:39, a second flare of strength M1.5 was recorded, lasting 15 minutes. Both flares disrupted shortwave radio communications.
On the eve, leading specialist Mikhail Leus from the Phobos Weather Center stated at a press conference regarding magnetic storms that the Sun is in a phase of increased activity, which will lead to an increase in the number of magnetic storms in the near future.
Boris Filipov, a leading researcher at the Institute of Earth Magnetism, Ionosphere and Radio Wave Propagation of the Russian Academy of Sciences named after Pushkov, emphasized that the Earth's geomagnetic field protects life on the planet from the harmful effects of solar eruptions and magnetic storms.
