Head of Israeli Military Intelligence Resigns
The head of Israeli military intelligence has resigned, taking responsibility for the failure to defend the country's borders during the attack on October 7, 2023. Major General Aharon Haliva, who served in the armed forces for 38 years, had spoken previously about a potential resignation. He joins several senior Israeli commanders in admitting their inability to foresee and prevent the deadliest attack in Israel's history.
"The intelligence failure is my fault," Haliva stated during his resignation ceremony. He called for a national inquiry to "examine" and "deeply understand" the reasons that led to the war between Israel and Hamas.
The attack on October 7 severely undermined the credibility of the Israeli military and intelligence services, which were considered practically invincible against Palestinian militant groups like Hamas.
