Risk Level of Monkeypox Infection Increased in Europe

The screening for monkeypox disease will be intensified worldwide following the identification of more cases outside Africa, reported Birmingham Live. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has raised the risk level of monkeypox infection from low to moderate.

This decision came after the first case of the disease was recorded in Sweden on August 15, followed by another case in Pakistan the next day. The ECDC, headquartered in Stockholm, stated that it is 'entirely likely' that new cases will be imported into Europe. 'Due to the close ties between Europe and Africa, we must be prepared for an increase in Group I imported cases,' said ECDC Director Pamela Randy Wagner in her announcement.
