US Military Base in Syria Under Attack

A US military base near the Koniko gas field in Syria's Deir ez-Zor province has come under attack, although the shells did not hit the main facility. This was reported by Reuters, citing American officials.

According to preliminary information, there were no injuries resulting from the attack. Earlier, a source within the security forces told Reuters that six shells were fired toward the US military base in Deir ez-Zor province, all of which landed in close proximity to the facility. It was noted that the US-led coalition responded to the attack with artillery fire.

Lebanese Al Mayadeen television reported that following the attack, American military aircraft actively flew over the skies of Deir ez-Zor.

The Pentagon had announced on August 13 that eight American service members were injured last week as a result of a drone attack on a military base in Syria.

According to the US, there are about 900 American troops in Syria and 2,500 in neighboring Iraq, who provide advice and assistance to local forces in order to prevent the resurgence of the Islamic State terrorist group. The Islamic State had captured significant territory in both countries in 2014 but has since been driven out.
