Iranian President Proposes Strikes on Israeli Bases in Azerbaijan: The Telegraph
The British outlet The Telegraph reports: “Iranian generals insist on striking Tel Aviv directly, but Iran's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, proposes to target secret Israeli bases located in neighboring countries.”
It is reported that the new president of Iran is struggling against the hardline stance of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in an attempt to avert a large-scale war with Israel.
According to the website, Iranian authorities are divided over how to respond to the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. The ultimate responsibility for Iran's response rests with the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
A source close to the Iranian president said, “Pezeshkian is concerned that any direct attack on Israel would have serious repercussions.”
Another aide to Pezeshkian stated, “He has suggested targeting something related to Israel in Azerbaijan or Iraqi Kurdistan, then informing those countries about it to bring an end to this whole drama.”
It is noted that the Iranian president has simultaneously proposed to arm Hezbollah with more modern weaponry and “allow them to fight” with significant support from Iran.
