Israel Informs US of Its Involvement in Ismail Haniyeh's Assassination: WP
The Israeli side immediately informed the United States of its involvement in the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas's political bureau, right after reports of his death. This is reported by The Washington Post (WP), citing its sources.
It is noted that Israel has officially declined to comment on his death. According to the publication's sources, American officials reacted to the news of the political bureau leader's death with "shock and outrage." Furthermore, Washington assessed Ismail Haniyeh's death as a serious setback to efforts for a ceasefire in Gaza.
The publication mentions that prior to his death, American officials believed they had made progress towards that goal. It is recalled that Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran on July 31, having arrived for the inauguration ceremony of Masoud Pezeshkian. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani stated that the ministry suspects Israel of being involved in the assassination of the Hamas political bureau leader. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement.
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has promised a "severe punishment" for the death of Haniyeh.
